Greatest additional benefit

The first place we meet our football recruits and their families on campus is the Luhrs Performing Arts Center. I believe first impression is everything. We have to put our best foot forward as a coaching staff, and I believe the Luhrs Center is a “wow factor” right off the bat.

Greatest opportunity as a student

This is a great opportunity for writers, as well as anyone on The Slate staff. We wouldn’t be able to see acts like we do without the Luhrs Center. My personal favorite was Justin Adams who opened for Trace Adkins. He was sitting in the lobby chatting with everyone. I got to interview him. It also was amazing to meet Wil Haygood and Ron Suskind. For me, as a journalism student, it was so cool to talk to these people I look up to.

Favorite performer you've met

My favorite was Glen Campbell when he made his final tour. I remember him sitting in the front seat of the van with me, which is unusual, and he said, “Hi, I’m Glen Campbell, what’s your name?” Blood, Sweat & Tears wanted to take me and the food home with them! (Another performer) asked me to take her to Walmart. I had mentioned earlier it was my birthday. She bought me a card and put $50 in it!

Best backstage save

The rocket-shaped blimp that Mnozil Brass brought for their performance last February had a slow leak in it. The pump they had was too loud to run during the show. They needed me to blow it up every few minutes by mouth on the side of stage to make sure it stayed inflated until they were ready to use it. I was hoping that I wasn’t in the middle of blowing it up when they ran offstage to grab it!

Most memorable moment

For me personally, it was walking across the Luhrs Center Stage, being hooded, and receiving my master’s degree. We do a lot of amazing shows, but we also host the graduate commencement ceremony, and that is a very meaningful event for the graduate students that attend Shippensburg University.
